Scott is still working out what to do with this present.

Hard to believe it’s been one year.

An amusement park close to the German border. Extremely large indoor play area so weather doesn’t matter. Rather a good rollercoaster as well. We went with Dan, Masami and Alex.

We drove from Alkmaar to Madurodam to see all the miniatures. Nice to see one time but Angus kept asking where the fun was.

After the cheese market we toured Alkmaar and had lunch at the Hof van Alkmaar.

Alkmaar is around 40 mins drive north of Amsterdam and the guide book warned us to get there early for the weekly cheese market but we weren’t as early as all the other tourists (including a Taiwanese high school sports team) so seeing was difficult. I put Angus on my shoulders to take some of the pictures. They allegedly trade cheese in the market but judging by the trucks parked round the corner I suspect it’s just delivered for our benefit and returned to a warehouse later. Nonetheless, it’s an excellent spectacle (when you can see it) and the commentary is done in Dutch, English, German and then Spanish (all by the same lady).

After lunch we took a walk around Amsterdam in the sun. Saw a family of Segways roaming the streets. Dinner was in Sumo just off Leidseplein which was a very busy all-you-can-eat Sushi place which was very good indeed and much cheaper than lunch for more and better food.

We drove to Amsterdam to get closer to our intended final destination of Alkmaar. Lunch was at Zushi where we’ve dined before but not with so few people (one other person) and not with Scott. The seating can’t be used by infants. Food was decent but came in at 93€ which it probably wasn’t worth.

This hotel in Amsterdam is very good and very well located, just 5 mins walk from Leidseplein and all the restaurants you could want. Pricey at 200€ but this is the peak season in a very popular city so it was one of the cheaper options. Came equipped with a Nespresso machine which I’ve always wanted to try. It also had a twin shower which I’ve never seen anywhere before.

We got good weather for our second visit here. Angus was much more adventurous than his first time a couple of years ago. It’s very family friendly, it would be easy to imagine settling down for a few beers while the kids amused themselves.
